Classified as a biological reserve since 1980, the island of Mogador is a very popular natural and ornithological site. It has several species of birds such as seagulls, gulls, great cormorants, pale swifts and ravens, but it is above all a place of welcome for the very rare 700 pairs of Eleonora's falcons which come to breed there between April and October before leaving for distant Madagascar. Added to these birds are some reptiles and rabbits.

Surfing is practiced all year round, thanks to the island of Mogador which protects it from large swells.

Gnaoua music thus uses several types of instruments, such as qraqeb (or qrâqech), a kind of rattlesnake, percussion instruments such as djembes, as well as guembris, which are string instruments. This musical style is experiencing a real craze, and Essaouira hosts the Gnaouas Festival every summer, which has been a real success since its very first editions.

The singular artists of Essaouira participate in the artistic movement of the city. Historically, when it was founded, Sultan Mohammed ben Abdellah brought in people of all origins, including a very large number of artists, which allowed the city, which had become a "crossroads of civilizations", to be a city of art and to possess exceptional artistic creativity.

Craftsmanship is very important in the life of the inhabitants of Essaouira. Diversified, it remains the main activity of the city. In 2011, more than 31% of the population of the province lives from the craft sector.

Cedar marquetry remains without a doubt the biggest provider of jobs and income. In 2011, 58% of artisans in Essaouira worked with cedar wood.
